Gypsy jazz is a style of lively swing music that was created by the great manouche gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt in Paris in the 1930s. Elements of this style include infectious rhythms, engaging melodies, lively improvisations, and lovely acoustic timbres which can include guitar, upright bass, violin, and clarinet. Django’s original band from the 1930’s included virtuoso violinist Stéphane Grappelli and was called Quintette du Hot Club de France. The gypsy jazz sound is now wildly popular with “hot club” bands enjoying success in cities all over the world. Local guitarist Steve Wohlrab is delighted to bring the sounds of gypsy jazz to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
